Introduction to Money Page
Money may make the world go round, but as billions of people know to their cost it can also irrevocably distort viable economies and destroy lives. Behind every dubious or destructive mining project are "bricks" of funding.
Underpinning the industry itself is a wall of money, cemented together by a vast array of private banks, insurers, government and multilateral agencies. These in turn employ a bewildering range of financial "vehicles"- from rudimentary credit cover, buying equity and issuing bonds, to trading in highly opaque derivatives.
But, whatever the nature of a specific investment, or how it's dressed up, the intention is usually brutally simple: to make more money.
Through this page, we're trying to deepen knowledge of who these money-makers are and how they operate. If you click on the name of your own bank or insurance company you'll discover some of the companies or projects they're backing. By using our Search engine, you can check a specific mining company for the extent and origin of the financing behind it.
Since this is a work in progress, you won't necessarily find everything you want here.
We suggest you first access a major piece of research, funded by the Heinrich Boell Foundation, that explains how mine finance works, along with a growing data-base of hundreds of funders and companies.
Go to: http://moneytometal.org. (There's also a Spanish version of the research on our site, last updated in April 2008).
We want this part of our site to be a collaborative effort. Feel free to send additional data (or corrections) by emailing us at : info@minesandcommunities.org Thank you!
And - if you're into blogging, why not visit the "From Money to Metal" blog? It's at: http://mining.boellblog.org/
