Arctic scramble heats up

3rd August 2007

Last month, we ran an article pointing out that mining companies are seeking to benefit from global warming by exploiting Greenland deposits previously rendered inaccessible due to heavy glacial cover. [http://www.minesandcommunities.org/Action/press1576.htm].

Now the Bush regime is intent on grabbing mineral resources under the fast-disappearing Acrtic sea ice. .But the administration still hasn't ratified the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea which, despite its weaknesses, [see: http://www.minesandcommunities.org/Action/press1077.htm] provides some protection for the claims of smaller nations.

Getting one up on the Americans, the Russian regime has now staked its own Arctic claim by sending two submersibles to plant the Russian flag on the ocean floor.
