The following is a position paper of groups on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines against the March 2004 claims of the Canadian/Norwegian mining Company Crew Development Corp concerning their plans to mine the lands of the Mangyan Peoples of Mindoro.

It refers directly back to our earlier posting on this issue. Crew have tried for some years to secure the right to mine for nickel in the lateritic soils of the mountains of Mindoro, which would involve pumping the ore to the coast, processing in a plant using sulphuric acid and dumping the 99% residue into the ocean off Mindoro's east coast.

The company plans have been strongly opposed by Indigenous Peoples, civil society groups, farmers fisherfolk and others down stream, by the Church and by municipal and Provincial leaders.
