Congo update

28th June 2007

As feared by some human rights workers, a military court in the DR Congo has given a clean sheet to Anvil Mining, despite earlier compelling evidence that the company provided transport to Congolese soldiers, knowing they were likely to attack unarmed civilians in the border town of Kilwa.

Last year, a military prosecutor who bravely pledged that he would diligently examine the accusations against the Australian company, was dismissed, amid speculation that this was a deliberate attempt by the government to compromise the trial.
