Cajamarca victory: exploration at Quilish suspended

The suspension by Newmont of its activities at Mount Quilish, Peru, has been greeted as a victory by the social organisations which led the recent resistance. The following updates and press articles (in Spanish and English) start with a declaration by those organisations.

The people of Cajamarca register victory!

17th September 2004

Release by Cajamarca Social Organizations

1. We are against Yanacocha and Newmont's abuses and greed, that has led them to threaten the life and health of local farmers.
2. We are against the Ministry of Energy and Mines centralising policies, where they take decisions in an office in Lima without taking into account the will of farmers from the outlying areas of Peru.
3. We are against the inertia of local and regional authorities, who held back from supporting the people.
4. We are against a type of journalism which lied and sold its conscience to the mining company.

During the hours of the night on September 16 2004 the town of Cajamarca signed RESOLUTION Nº 427-2004-MEM/AM which prevents Yanacocha continuing exploration at Mount Quilish, and opens the doors to the town of Cajamarca to continue fighting to protect Mount Quilish, the source of water and life for Cajamarquinos.

MOUNT QUILISH IS NOT FOR SALE! FOR THE DEFENSE OF MOUNT QUILISH! LIFE, NOT GOLD!
