During the Philippine National Mining conference in May 2002, Dr. Jun Saturay, who was then the Chairman of Kalipunan ng Makabayan Mindoreno (Network of Patriotic Mindorenos), reported that there were five mass leaders and anti-mining activists killed since 2001 in Mindoro island.

Mindex Resources Development Inc. (Mindex) of Norway - which merged with Crew Development Corporation of Canada - launched the Mindoro Nickel Project which covers 9,720 hectares in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro. Vice Mayor Juvy Magsino actively participated in opposing the said project and militarization in the area. This is one of the reasons why the Vice Mayor Magsino became so prominent and loved by the people of Mindoro.

Below is an action letter denouncing the recent murder of human rights and anti-mining TNCs activists in Mindoro.
