Buyelwa Sonjica, the Minerals and Energy minister, says the high fatality rate in mines is of great concern. The minister said she will ensure that prescribed safety standards are met by all mines.

Sonjica made the comment yesterday, during a visit to Anglo Ashanti's Moab Khotsong mine near Orkney, in the North West.

The visit was sparked by the death of two workers in a rock fall over the weekend. She also urged health and safety officials to tighten inspections.

Sonjica added that more investments to research accident risks are also needed.
