Latin American Update

5th February 2007

Last weekend, Britain's Sunday Telegraph announced that a consortium of Chinese companies, led by the Zijin Mining Group, had successfully bid for control of Monterrico Metals, the company behind the most controversial new mining project in Peru.

It followed - surely not by coincidence - findings by Peru's Ombudsperson that the UK junior had wilfully deceived the public about the legality of its concession and failed to secure consent for its operations from the local communities.

A gathering of 3,000 people in Ecuadaor has stridently condemned mining practices in the country, calling on the government, inter alia, to impose a moratorium on all new mining projects .
