Latin America Update

10th September 2006

10 10Earlier this year we posted a report on lead contamination caused by an abandoned metals treatment plant, operated by GEOTECNICA, in San Antonio Oeste (Argentina's Río Negro province) [see: http://www.minesandcommunities.org/Action/press757.htm]

Now, a similar case has emerged in Jujuy province. We publish an exclusive investigation by our Latin America editor, Luis Claps, following a trip to the area last month..

Luis has also sent us reports on recent protests against mining elsewhere in Argentina, demonstrating once again that there's hardly anywhere else in the world that the industry has created more apprehension and sparked such resistance.

Honduras has been ruffled by accusations, made by a Catholic Bishop, that mining companies have been paying bribes to politicians in order to influence the outcome of the forthcoming elections.
