Marching against Inco in Sulawesi

Report from Yayasan Tanah Merdeka (YTM), Central Sulawesi, Indonesia

October 7 2003

On October 7th, two locations held actions against PT Inco in Central Sulawesi. One action was organized by Jatam Sulawesi. Over 250 people particpated in the action. There was a march that traveled down some streets in Palu, the provinical capital. The rally was stopped in several places for speeches like in front of the regional police station.

There were cheers....against Inco, TNCs, the Mega-Hamzah administration, and the military support of the TNCs like PT Inco. The action lasted about 3 hours and caused traffic jams in the city of Palu. People came out of their workplaces (government, stores, banks, schools) to watch the action.

At the same time, there was another action organized by YTM (Free Earth Foundation), Walhi Central Sulawesi and the Bahomotefe and One Pute Jaya communities in Kolonodale in Morowali, Central Sulawesi. More updates to follow on the outcomes of these actions. This afternoon, the TVRI station in Palu held a interactive dialogue about PT Inco problems with speakers including Yus Mangun (Local Parliament member), the head of regional mining body, Aristan (Jatam Sulawesi) and Arianto Sangaji (YTM).
