Latin American Update

11th July 2006

It's far too soon to predict the effective end of largescale mining in Honduras, Chubut (Argentina), Costa Rica, El Salvador or northern Peru. In fact, for Panama the trend seems to be in the opposite direction.

However Honduras is now debating a new mining law; the Chubut Deputy Chamber has legislated for a three year ban on metallic mining in some parts of the province; and El Salvador has effectively suspended all new licences.

A delegation went to Lima last week, demanding suspension of Monterrico Metals' Rio Blanco project.

The protestors claim the project is illegal, and that a police report has confirmed complicity between the UK company and thugs who broke up a peaceful demonstration against the project last March
