It's the biggest coal strip-mine on earth, operated by the world's number one private coal producer, Peabody.

Eight months ago, the company's plans to re-open a generating station and mine led to vehement protests from Dine (Navajo) and Hopi tribal members. At the centre of the debate is the use of one or more underground aquifers [See: http://www.minesandcommunities.org/Action/press1014.htm]

Last week, the communities met with government to discuss three alternative proposals - one of which was to do precisely nothing, thereby safeguarding rapidly diminishing supplies of water.
