China has become the world’s second biggest oil consumer (after the US), thanks not only to increasing electrical power demand, but also domestic car ownership. During 2003 China's car manufacturing grew no less than 84% (to 2.1 million vehicles), and the demand for aluminium by the automobile industry leapt accordingly.
