Latin American Update: Peru and Mexico

26th February 2006

The Peruvian government may decide not to extend Doe Run´s environmental plan. It will, in the meantime, "make observations", said a source from the government, although Doe Run will have more time (30 days) to respond to these observations. Then, the Ministry of Energy will have to submit a new resolution.

Last weekend, a mining industry body itself joined petitioners from all over the world in condemning Doe Run's abject failure to comply with basic environmemtal standards in the country.

Hope has now run out for 65 miners trapped underground in a Mexican mine owned by the country's largest industrial conglomerate. Grupo Mexico also manages South Peru Copper which has for many years been criticised for its high levels of contamination.
