A highly ambivalent decision to allow Barrick's Pascua-Lama project to proceed has incensed many who see it as an unworkable, and discreditable, compromise. In Bolivia, the Chiquitano Indigenous People urge president Morales not to betray the promise on which he was elected. Panamanian communities are up in arms at proposals to revive former projects. And there's confirmation from Argentina of the damage done to children by an abandoned lead mine.
