Latin American Update

28th June 2006

Central America sees the rejuvenation of a coordinated campaign against destructive mining.

Peru's Supreme Court tells the government that it must declare a Health Emergency in La Oroya.

After international pressure was applied, US-based Drummon Coal has negotiated an agreement with trade unioinists in Colombia.

A Chilean court has upheld a small miner's claims to lands on the giant Pascua Lama gold project. Although a recent e-mail petition has attracted support around the world it's only local action which will save the day, according to a leading Chilean environmentalist.

Meanwhile Barrick Gold - the Canadian company behind Pascua Lama - has also created a "rebellion" in two small towns in Argentina.
