Latin American Update

27th May 2006

What has happened, in both Chile and Argentina, since widespread opposition arose over the Pascual Lama project in 2005? As Barrick Gold continues to claim the mine is "on track" our Latin America editor summarises the present legal situation.

There's a strike at Drummond Coal's operations in Colombia and further protests at the failure of Doe Run to protect the health of citizens in La Oroya, Peru;

Citizens scrabbling for copper - literally - on the streets of Argentina while communities in Belen launch another declaration against mining.

Chavez in Venezuela declares he will "nationalise" all mining projects; but it looks like the Indian company, Jindal, will secure the prized El Mutun iron ore lode in Boliva.
