Latin America update

10th June 2007

We wouldn't be updating Latin America if we couldn't - yet again - report a wave of protests against mining projects; accusations of betrayal or obfuscation by the authorities (as in Argentina); and revelations of yet more contamaination issues with which communities have to contend (as in the Dominican Republic, thanks to Cemex, the global cememt company).

This week, our Latin America editor also shares with you two analytical pieces touching on the relationship between the "state" and civil society in Bolivia and Peru, when it comes to determining a viable course for mining.
