South Africa update

25th July 2007

After being slammed for the unacceptable recent death rate in its platinum operations, Anglo American faces a new attack from the South African government following fatalties at one of the gold mines operated by the company's 41%-owned associate, AngloGoldAshanti.

Last week, Mohlohlo residents, still threatened by forced removals on behalf of Anglo's subsidiary platinum mining company PPL, filed for a "prohibitory interdict" in support of their right to remain on their land.
